A dark form silhouetted against the setting sun paced along the summit of a hill. Waving blades of grass crowned this short peak, painted hues of scarlet and canary. A line of trees bordered the surrounding hills, their leafy branches creaking as the wind whistled through. Although it had been a strangely warm day, hints of winter chill crept into the darkening landscape, ruffling the misty gray fur of the Applir wolfe. She was padding through the Redwood Meadows, clutching a dead hare in her jaws. As she walked, strings of saliva trailed like a comet’s tail, their movements swept by the cool breeze.
Avalanche paused at a cleft, her paws kneading the edge as if contemplating leaping over. But it was barely wide enough for her capabilities, and with a hare clenched in her jaw even more so difficult. Her amber eyes roved the scenery and pinpointed the spot where the mini chasm ended. She limped over to that place to cross, her damaged leg experiencing the strain of all the hunting she had done that day. Her glance wavered to stare behind her. Far in the distance she saw the black specks of her comrades, or at least the wolves she had accompanied on the hunt. Naturally, because of her slight disability, they had sent her back after killing the small hare. Which she didn’t even catch herself. But she determinedly shoved this bitter thought away, concentrating on the task at hand.
Avalanche shifted her weight onto her left side, so as to allow her right paw to relax some. Now that she had passed by the large nick in the earth, she was traveling at a quicker pace. The blazing sun was to her right, its harsh light dimmed as darkness crowded the sky. Thin tendrils of light grappled at this darkness but at last gave in. As the she-wolfe plunged into the rather sparsely populated woods, the night was wreathed in pitch blackness. She stumbled a bit, for her eyes took a long time to adjust. But in the meantime, she had crashed headlong into a tree and dropped the hare. Alarmed by the abruptness of it, she scrambled to retrieve it, sniffing and pawing at the ground wildly. At last she located the rabbit and firmly clenched it in her jaws. Her muzzle swiveled about. She hoped no one else had seen her clumsy move.

It wasn't strange for Champagne to be out wandering the territory. She explored at all hours of the day, whether it was at sun up or sun down. Her long legs carried her far over the expanse of the territory and by the end of the week she had crossed all trails that could possibly be covered and then some. Her wine colored eyes had looked at each leaf with intricate detail, absorbing her surroundings and letting everything in the lush territory in. It was a beautiful expanse of land, and she was glad to be the ruling Beta over it, under her alphas.
On this particular day she was out and about in the snow, her long coal-smudged legs making soft imprints in the sticky and almost melted crusted power. She was wondering what the rest of her pack mates were up to, though she knew they were out on a hunting trip and would be back shortly. Her nose and ears knew there were other members out here, though, wolves that hadn't joined in on the hunt and were around. With a lazy meander Champagne strode towards the first scent she caught, one that smelled of Avalanche and possibly of some game.
As the beta wove through the trees, her slim body began to move into a rhythm of swings. She smiled softly to herself as she looked down at her feet, her hips curling around each tree trunk as she came closer to her fellow pack member. In her slight and small blissful moment she was a gypsy princess, a queen in her own mind. It was a small day dream as she pretended and felt herself to be beautiful for a mere couple moments. Elated with her new small high, she came out of the trees to see around the small hill Avalanche sitting with, as she had somewhat expected, a hare off to her side.
"Greetings, Avalanche. How was the hunt?" She asked with a slight bounce to her voice, her good mood spreading into her tone. "Unfortunately I was asleep when they decided to go, but..." She shrugged her shoulders, a small chuckle escaping her lips.
